The books have a different tone than the movies. But they are excellent. The best place to start is the three volume complete edition of the Howard stories:
The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian
The Bloody Crown of Conan
The Conquering Sword of Conan
You may want to revisit the old Conan stories, at least the ones written by Robert E. Howard. He definitely had a strong moral compass, and the stories had solid plots and antagonists. There's a terrific collection on Amazon which includes early drafts, synopses, and Howard's world-building exercise.
To answer your question if readers will still enjoy well-written adventure stories, I'm sure that's still the case.
