About This Book

Welcome to New York. Here, burning figures roam the streets, men in brightly colored costumes scale the glass and concrete walls, and creatures from space threaten to devour our world. This is the Marvel Universe, where the ordinary and fantastic interact daily. This is the world of MARVELS.

Follows thirty-five years of Marvel superhero action from the perspective of Phil Sheldon, a newspaper photographer who witnessed some of the more spectacular battles and events.

The MCU is just a mish-mash of various storylines that are altered further to adapt for a different medium. The source material is unrecognizable in some cases. I wouldn't recommend approaching comics with such an emphasis on MCU relevant stories. There's a lot of stuff before, in-between, and after that enhances and differentiates those stories from the movies. If you still want to ignore this advice, then I'd recommend a fresh start with movie-like sensibilities (though, not 616 "canon"):

There isn't really a "main story" that every comic is constantly connected to. Think of it more like a web of smaller stories. Every comic is self-contained in its own little bubble UNTIL it's mentioned somewhere else. Occasionally, there are major crossovers/events where a selection of series will be connected briefly (e.g. Civil War). That said, there have been a few attempts at planned, long-form plotting with an overarching story e.g. most of Hickman's Marvel works builds up to Secret Wars.

So... some people would rather just be "Marvel fans" and don't really want to read comics. I know people who just read wikis and summary articles without actually reading the source material.

Does she read books/novels? Does she appreciate art (prints, posters, T-shirts, exhibitions, conventions, galleries, PC backgrounds, etc.)? What are her favorite movies, TV, books, games, etc.? Does she like older stuff (<1960s)?

  • Alex Ross' beautiful painterly art brings to life Busiek's grounded glimpse into the 1939-1974 Marvel universe from the perspective of Sheldon, an average news photographer. It begins with Human Torch, science project met with public criticism/wonder, and follows with Sheldon's first experiences with early Namor, Fantastic Four, Avengers, X-Men, & Spider-Man.

Guardians of the Galaxy (Star-Lord)

With every cheating husband, missing person, identity crisis, off/on relationship, drug bust, and publicity/political scandal, Jessica Jones comes closer to recovering from a mysterious past trauma related to the Purple Man.

How much time do you have for comics? The answer determines how expansive recommendations are. Regardless, don’t try to read everything. First appearances & early origins are not always good starting points—older comics can be an acquired taste for modern audiences. Remember, there are so many other great characters/stories/publishers to explore (and not all comics are about superheroes).

Think about your favorite stories from other media. What you might like to read in a comic? Are you more interested in good storytelling or becoming a Marvel knowledge nerd?

Creative teams change often and characters get re-worked e.g. I never cared for Hawkeye until Matt Fraction’s run. Focus on well-received and relatively self-contained stories. Everything is canon unless stated otherwise (e.g. "Ultimate" universe).

Many characters/stories started back in the 1960's. You'll have to make a decision to either start there and catch up (not recommended). OR, just be OK starting somewhere in the middle/newer and "ride along" whenever something comes up that you don't know about (wiki the relevant info if you must). There are known "starting points" but since everything is part of one long continuity from the 60s, there might be some old references you don't catch.

All that said, I recommend forgetting about continuity, canon, timelines, "catching up", etc. when you first start out. Pick out the "best" or "new reader friendly" titles and just read for fun instead of encyclopedic Marvel knowledge. If you don't want to do that, then you'll have to start with the 1960s stuff and follow some strict reading order (ComicBookHerald, CMRO) that will take 20+ years to get through (not to mention it will be hard to find/collect/buy/organize many older comics). All the while, you've missed out on some great comics from other publishers and all of the new stuff that came out while you were reading.

Consider your intent/commitment. Think about your favorite shows, movies, books, etc. Do you seek quality storytelling or encyclopedic Marvel knowledge? Plan to collect? How deep are you willing to dive?

Don’t try to read everything at once. There’s too much. Forget about catching up, continuity, universes, and timelines. Older comics can be an acquired taste for modern audiences, so 1st appearances/early origins may not be ideal starting points. Creative teams change often, characters get re-worked, and origins are re-told. Remember, there are many other great characters, creators, publishers, and genres to explore.

Pick an interesting character/team and seek their best stories. Don’t get stuck preparing to read. Focus on acclaimed, self-contained, and complete stories. You may encounter an unexplained reference/character/event—just ride along or Wiki.

Events/crossovers can be fun and/or tedious. They are most appreciated by readers well-versed in relevant continuity. Not to be a pedant, but you would've found everything mentioned here + MORE via a Google or Reddit search. At least 2 comments are pre-made copy/pastes (they've been posted before = searchable). More importantly, what are you doing with this very general information? How do you know if you'll even like what's being recommended? Are you researching titles after getting them? Wouldn't an aggregated/voted "top graphic novels of all time" list be a better general foundation than a handful of commenters with varying tastes in one comic sub?
